How much does stamped concrete cost in the Sacramento area?

Stamped concrete around Sacramento typically runs $9 to $14 per square foot installed for a single pattern in one color, $12 to $20 for mid-range designs with a border, and $18 to $28 for multi-color, hand-antiqued work, per 2026 cost guides. California ready-mix and labor keep most local jobs in the upper half of those ranges.

Those are market numbers, not quotes. Your yard sets the real price: footage, base condition, access, and how far you take the design. Here is how 2026 pricing breaks down, and what our stamped and stained concrete service actually builds for the money.

What does stamped concrete cost per square foot?

Design tier sets the rate. One pattern in one color is the budget end of decorative work. A second color, a contrasting border, or hand-applied accent stain each add a labor pass, and the rate climbs with every pass. The 2026 guides cluster like this:

FinishPublished 2026 range
Plain broom-finish concrete$4 - $13 per sq ft
Stained concrete$3 - $15 per sq ft
Stamped, one pattern and color$9 - $14 per sq ft
Stamped, two colors with a border$12 - $20 per sq ft
Stamped, multi-color and hand-antiqued$18 - $28 per sq ft
Stamped overlay on existing concrete$8 - $15 per sq ft

These are installed prices: forming, pour, stamp, color and the first seal. Materials alone mean little in stamped work, because the labor is the product.

Two rows need context. Stained concrete spans a wide band because prep varies: one color on a sound slab sits near the bottom, saw-cut patterns near the top. And the overlay row only applies if your existing slab is sound. A 3/8 to 3/4 inch stamped overlay buys the pattern without a tear-out, but it inherits every problem in the slab below it.

What does a full project cost?

A 20x20 patio is 400 square feet. At the rates above, that pencils out to roughly $3,600 to $5,600 for a basic stamp, $4,800 to $8,000 for mid-range work, and $7,200 to $11,200 for the hand-finished tier. National guides put a 640-square-foot two-car driveway at $6,400 to $8,960 basic and $8,960 to $12,800 mid-range, with high-end work past that.

Larger pours price better per square foot because forming, mobilization and finishing spread across more feet. For the plain-gray end of these budgets, our concrete patio cost guide and our driveway cost guide for Roseville cover the same math without the decorative layer.

What moves the price?

Pattern and color count. Every color is a step: integral color mixed into the concrete, then the powdered release color the crew casts down before the mats hit. Hand-applied stain accents go on after cure. Each layer is material plus labor plus time, which is the whole gap between $9 work and $28 work.

Borders and bands. A contrasting or smooth-troweled band frames the field and gives control joints a clean home. It also prices like a small second job inside the first, because the crew forms and finishes it separately. Plenty of patios get the custom look for less by stamping the field and keeping the border simple.

Thickness and reinforcement. A patio pours at four inches. A driveway wants five to six inches with rebar, because the stamp changes nothing about the loads on the slab. That structural bill lands before any pattern shows up, so a stamped driveway budget starts higher than a patio budget.

Access and tear-out. Old concrete has to leave first: removal runs $2 to $6 per square foot in 2026 guides. A backyard the mixer cannot reach adds pumping or buggying, and a tight side yard slows every wheelbarrow of the pour.

Sealing. The first seal is part of a proper install. Staying sealed is a maintenance line, and it is worth its own section.

What does stamped concrete cost to maintain?

Plan on resealing every two to three years. Sealing guides put contractor rates near $0.75 to $1.50 per square foot, and stamped-specific guides quote $200 to $600 per visit for a typical patio. Sealer is what protects the color you paid for: Sacramento summers deliver months of hard sun, and unprotected color fades the way paint on a south-facing fence does.

Between seal cycles, upkeep is a hose and a soft broom. The expensive mistake is skipping the reseal until the color has gone flat, because color restored later never quite matches color protected on time.

The repair reality deserves a plain sentence: concrete can crack, stamped or not. Crews manage that by hiding control joints in the pattern lines and pouring on well-compacted base, so the slab has no reason to move. When a crack does show, it reads louder across color and pattern than it would in plain gray, and patched spots rarely match. That is the tradeoff against pavers, which lift and re-set piece by piece but usually cost more installed. If you are weighing patterns with this in mind, our stamped concrete patio ideas guide covers which patterns and colors age well here.

How does the Sacramento area change the price?

Ready-mix is the first local fact. California concrete averaged about $215 per cubic yard in 2026 tracking, roughly 30 percent above the national midpoint, with the Sacramento metro near $204. That floor pushes local flatwork toward the upper half of any national range before a stamp mat ever comes out.

The ground is the second. Clay and hardpan on both sides of the Sacramento-Placer county line hold winter water and swell, and a stamped surface shows base movement faster than plain gray does. One local estimating guide figures $3 to $5 per square foot of added excavation when crews hit expansive clay pockets. Money spent compacting base under a decorative slab is the cheapest crack insurance there is.

Heat is the third. On a 95-degree valley afternoon, surface moisture can evaporate faster than the slab replaces it, which is how plastic shrinkage cracks start, and a stamped pour also has to hold crisp mat lines while the crew works the surface. Summer stamped jobs here start at first light, and cure protection goes on as soon as the surface can take it. Good scheduling costs nothing and saves the finish.
