Almost every leaning wall we replace died the same death: water. Soil behind a wall gets heavy when it is saturated, and without gravel backfill and a drain path, that weight leans on the wall every winter until it moves. Our walls get drainage as a designed component: backfill, fabric and outlets, plus footings and reinforcement sized to the height and soil they hold.

Three wall types cover almost every yard we see. Block walls, built from concrete masonry units on a poured footing and finished with stucco or stone veneer, are the workhorse for terraces, planters and pool surrounds. Poured concrete walls are formed and poured as one piece, the strongest choice where height, load or a tight footprint demands it. Boulder and rock walls stack natural stone on an engineered base for a softer look on planted slopes.
We recommend the type from the site, not the catalog: how tall the wall needs to be, what it holds back, how the yard drains, and what it should look like from the patio. All three get the same footing, drainage and backfill discipline. The finish is the part you see. The base and the drain are the parts that decide whether the wall is still straight in twenty years.
Every wall starts with layout and a dig. We cut the slope back, excavate to undisturbed soil and set a compacted base or a poured footing sized to the wall height. Drainage goes in before the wall goes up: perforated pipe at the base, clean drain rock, filter fabric to keep soil out of the rock, and an outlet that carries water somewhere it is allowed to go.
Then the wall rises in courses or in a single pour, gets backfilled in compacted lifts, and is finished with caps, veneer or stucco to match the yard. A typical residential wall takes a few days from excavation to finish, longer with engineering, steps or a patio tied into it. Your written quote states the timeline and every line item.
A graded backyard with a wall or two where the slope used to be is a different property: flat turf where kids can play, a terraced planter catching the eye instead of a dirt bank, a patio level enough to entertain on. On the corridor's hillier lots, retaining work is often the single move that unlocks the rest of the backyard plan.
