Pergola installation and patio cover installation both start underground. A pergola carries real load: wind pushes the posts, and a solid roof adds weight. That load has to reach the ground through a footing sized for it. So we plan the footings before the concrete truck shows up.
While the forms are still open, we dig and pour pier footings under each post location. Anchor bolts or post bases get set in wet concrete, dead level and square. Conduit sleeves for lights and fans go in at the same time.

A pergola has open rafters. It breaks up the afternoon sun and still lets light and air through. Rain comes through too. Pick it when you want filtered shade and an open feel.
A pavilion or patio cover has a solid roof. It gives full shade and keeps the table dry in winter rain. A covered patio also protects an outdoor kitchen or a TV. A wood patio cover can attach to the house or stand on its own.

Roseville splits the answer between the Building Division and the Planning Division. The Building Division requires a permit for a trellis, patio cover, deck or shed attached to the house. A detached patio cover or trellis of 120 square feet or less is exempt. Even on exempt work, standard engineering methods and good construction practices still apply.
Zoning applies either way. An unenclosed patio cover cannot enclose 20 percent or more on any side not attached to the house. It also cannot be built from materials that create a year round livable room.
Height drives the setbacks. Under 7 feet tall, the structure can sit anywhere on the lot outside the front yard setback. Over 7 feet, the cap is 15 feet and one story, with 5 feet from rear and side lines. Above 10 feet, every extra foot of height adds a foot of setback.
Most pergolas clear 7 feet, so those rules usually apply. When engineering is required, plans are stamped by a California registered civil or structural engineer. We size the structure to the rule, pull the permit and schedule the inspections. See everything we build in Roseville.
We build in wood, with heavy timber posts and beams. Steel connector plates and brackets tie the joints together. The posts sit on standoff bases, so the end grain stays off a wet slab.
Valley summers bake a finish, and winter rain finds every open joint. A stain or sealer put on to schedule keeps the wood from checking and graying. We tell you what the finish needs and when.
On a solid roof we add fascia, flashing and a roof surface that sheds water clear of the posts. Gutters go on when the runoff has somewhere to go. Downspouts tie into the same drainage plan as the patio.
Lights, fans and outlets get planned before the pour. Wiring is permitted electrical work, so it belongs in the drawings early. With the posts set on plan, the artificial turf lawn and patio lines around them stay clean.
